In 2026, Prime Day Australia is taking place on a completely different week to in the US, who had theirs in the last week of June this year. Previously, the dates had overlapped.

Prime Day is an twice-a-year online sales event (think Black Friday or Click Frenzy), only it is exclusive to Amazon Prime customers. It started as a one-day event in the US in 2015, but has since expanded to a week long event that takes place across the globe, including Australia. The first Prime Day Down Under happened in 2018, and has grown every year since. Australian users get access to deals on both Amazon.com.au and the Amazon Global Store until the conclusion of the event in the US.

Annoyed by YouTube ads? There are a few ways to avoid them now, such as YouTube's own official option with a paid YouTube Premium subscription.

However, the privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo is now providing a new, free way to block YouTube ads.

This week, DuckDuckGo announced that its free web browser will now block most video ads, including ads shown on YouTube. 

The YouTube Ad Blocking feature is turned on by default on Mac, Windows, and iOS versions of the web browser. There's nothing that users on those devices have to do, as the feature is on by default.

YouTube Ad Blocking is also available on the Android version of the DuckDuckGo web browser. However, it needs to be turned on by going to the browser’s Settings and then toggling Ad Blocking on. DuckDuckGo says the option to have ad blocking activated by default is coming soon to Android as well.

DuckDuckGo launched in 2008 with a privacy-focused search engine alternative to Google. Since then, the company has rolled out other privacy-focused alternatives to Google products, such as its desktop and mobile web browsers. 

The company has also benefited from Google's missteps. Earlier this year, for example, DuckDuckGo reported a spike in growth after Google announced new unavoidable AI features. While DuckDuckGo does have its own set of AI tools, they are completely optional, and the company makes sure to promote that. DuckDuckGo has a completely AI-free search product called DuckDuckGo No-AI.

Now, DuckDuckGo is taking on Google's sister site, YouTube, with its default ad blocker built right into its privacy-focused web browser.

The owner of X, the everything app, has announced a new feature that might be useful but also annoying.

In a standalone post on X, Elon Musk announced that Community Notes will get a new feature at some point soon. If a user interacts with a post that has since been corrected via Community Notes, a bot will send them a direct message about the correction.

Musk's posts were pretty vague and raised a few questions. For starters, we don't know when this feature will launch. More importantly, though, Musk didn't specify what kinds of interactions will prompt one of these automatic DMs. Will any interaction, such as a like, trigger one, or does the user need to repost or quote the post for the bot to send a message?

Beyond that, it's worth asking how effective this will actually be in curbing the spread of misinformation. Oftentimes, a post will gain a ton of traction before a Community Note corrects it, and sending messages to people who helped spread the post will only work if the users actually check their DMs, and then actually feel like removing whatever interactions they made with the corrected post.

Still, some accountability is better than none, I suppose.

Next time you go in for a surgery, will your doctor be a five-foot tall, 60 pound humanoid robot named Surgie? It very well could be!

A team of surgeons and engineers at University of California San Diego just successfully completed the first ever pair of surgeries during a preclinical trial using teleoperated humanoid robots.

Both of the surgeries were performed on non-primate mammals, so we're not yet at the level of operating on humans quite yet. But, it seems headed in that direction.

One surgery involved a humanoid robot and a human surgeon teaming up to perform a gallbladder removal. The human doctor acted as the assistant during the procedure. However, the second surgery, a laparoscopic gallbladder removal, was performed completely by a team of two humanoid robot surgeons.

"This study shows that humanoid robots have a viable future in the field of surgery," said UC San Diego Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering's Michael Yip, who is also one of the paper's senior authors.

A robot surgeon is more than just an impressive accomplishment. The team detailed the important and practical uses for humanoid robots like Surgie at the operating table.

"Remotely operated and autonomous humanoid robots have real potential for amplifying access to critical surgeries to which patients would otherwise not have access," Yip said to UC San Diego Today. "This can help address the healthcare crisis not only in the United States, but also worldwide.”

The team provided examples such as humanoid robots "being deployed in remote communities where staffing is challenging, or in austere environments like search and rescue scenarios where a massive deployment of field medicine is needed in a short period of time."

Standing at only five-feet tall and weighing just 60 pounds also makes Surgie extremely mobile and compact in size.

However, there are still some kinks that need to be worked out. The team says the humanoid robot had to be recalibrated a few times during the surgery, which extended the time it took to complete the procedure. In addition, latency issues are still be worked on. Latency, or the time it takes for a human to control the robot and the robot responding, is especially important regarding deploying these robots in remote locations.

Regardless of these issues, the team behind Surgie believes there is a role the humanoid robot can play right now in the field. Being a humanoid robot means that Surgie can walk around and perform tasks similar to humans. Researchers envision scenarios where Surgie can work as an assistant in the operating room, getting tools for the human surgeons and cleaning up after procedures.

"Many communities struggle with adequate staffing on the surgical team, which means patients are not being treated," Yip said. "Our goal is an operating theatre of the future, where humanoid robots and humans work side by side as an integrated team to deliver procedures to those in need, both in traditional hospital settings as well as in non-traditional, field medicine scenarios."

Well, rather than the mostly plastic build of typical headphones, the Collexion headphones feature a stainless steel and vegan leather chassis with metal buttons and on-ear controls. When Sonos released its first-ever headphones in spring 2024, our biggest complaint was the steep $449 price tag. So it's a good thing the brand knocked $50 off the list price last summer, and even better that it just shaved an extra $120 off just because.

If you use Anthropic's Claude AI chatbot, and you're wondering if you're using it too much, assistance is coming from an unlikely source: Claude.

Anthropic says Claude's new "reflect" tool is designed to help users answer complex questions about their AI use.

That includes whether you're using Claude effectively, too often, or for too many tasks that are better suited for yourself instead of artificial intelligence, Anthropic said in a blog post Thursday.

What will Claude's reflect feature help with?

The insights dashboard shows key topics, usage patterns, and frequent tasks. Users can review their chat activity over periods of one, three, six, or 12 months. They can also set (and dismiss) quiet hours and break nudges.

The feature "invites you to step back and examine the role Claude plays in your life," the company said in its announcement.

"It will periodically surface questions like, 'What's one thing you want to keep doing yourself, even if Claude could do it faster?' and give you the chance to talk it through with Claude."

Given the growing concern about AI use, including cognitive offloading and atrophy, the feature could offer users genuinely useful information.

Users get in-depth details about how they "collaborate" with Claude, plus practical suggestions for prompting the chatbot without providing repetitive information.

The tool also incorporates Anthropic's proprietary framework for AI use, which helps decide how to delegate to a chatbot and how to accurately assess its outputs.

What about sensitive data and chats?

The insight reports do not incorporate incognito chats. It doesn't access files in connected tools, such as your email inbox or health data.

Reflection insights will cover sensitive conversations, such as discussions about mental health, but only at a high level. If Claude has previously shared mental health support resources during a chat, that information may appear in the dashboard as well.

Anthropic consulted independent experts to develop insights that would help people evaluate what works best about Claude for them.

Though Anthropic requires users to be 18 or older, Ryn Linthicum, Anthropic's head of well being policy, told Mashable that the company learned from youth developmental experts what tools could help young adults and parents of children better understand their AI use.

The reflection feature is in beta for free and paid subscribers with their chat memories turned on.

Chinese regulatory filings, unearthed earlier this week, revealed that Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a significantly larger battery than its predecessor, suggesting a longer battery life as well.

This, however, may come at the expense of added thickness and weight.

Reliable Chinese leaker Ice Universe revealed the details in a post on Weibo.

"The iPhone 18 Pro Max's 5500mAh battery comes at the cost of a 240-gram weight and a 9mm thick body," he wrote.

Apple's iPhone 17 Pro Max is 8.75mm thick and weighs 233 grams. If Ice Universe's numbers are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro Max would be 0.25mm thicker and 7 grams heavier; a small difference, but still noticeable, especially on a device that's already pretty large and heavy.

MacRumors pointed out that, for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple has reportedly adopted a new type of vapor chamber that uses stainless steel, which could also make the phone heavier.

Notably, Apple's largest phone has shed some weight over the years, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max still holding the title of being the heaviest iPhone ever. Its weight is exactly 240 grams, so the iPhone 18 Pro Max might come in at a tie.

There's no word on the dimensions and weight of the iPhone 18 Pro. Its battery will reportedly only be a little larger than before, so perhaps there won't be a significant change in thickness and weight, either.

It's also worth noting that Apple is rumored to be launching the iPhone Ultra, alongside the Pro models, in September. That one is almost certainly going to be the heaviest new iPhone, thanks to its foldable design.

A U.S. federal judge has approved a settlement that will see Elon Musk pay $1.5 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for failing to disclose his 2022 Twitter stock purchases within the legally required period. Even so, she was not happy about it. The penalty is a mere fraction of the amount Musk gained from the alleged violation, which he is apparently free to keep.

In her order filed in a Columbia District Court on Wednesday, Judge Sparkle Sooknanan expressed "significant misgivings" about the deal between Musk and the SEC. Under the agreement, Musk will pay $1.5 million to the SEC — literally one percent of the $150 million he allegedly saved due to his late disclosure. 

Further, the penalty will technically be paid by a trust in Musk's name rather than directly by the billionaire himself, a manoeuvre that the court noted appeared "for the sole purpose of Mr. Musk being able to say that no relief was entered against him in his personal capacity."

However, as the court's role is only to assess whether the agreement meets "minimum standards of fairness and reasonableness," Sooknanan stated that it is therefore obligated to accept the deal.

"[T]he Court may not step in the shoes of the SEC, notwithstanding that the SEC's decision-making in this case raises red flags," Sooknanan wrote in her order on Wednesday. "So mindful of that principle and, as always, its proper role, the Court is constrained to accept the Parties’ agreement despite its significant misgivings."

Sooknanan also questioned whether Musk was receiving special treatment.

"The Court is left to wonder whether the SEC will afford other alleged securities-law violators such solicitude," she wrote. "Or is this a one-time deal designed for Mr. Musk negotiated without the involvement of the SEC lawyers litigating this case?"

The SEC filed the case in January last year, suing Musk for late disclosure of his Twitter stock purchases in 2022. Under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, Musk was legally required to notify the SEC within 10 days of acquiring enough shares to own more than five percent of the company. 

Instead, Musk allegedly waited 21 days, finally notifying the SEC of his purchase 11 days past the deadline. Musk also reportedly bought even more Twitter stock within those 21 days, spending an additional $500 million to increase his stake to 9.2 percent. 

According to the SEC's lawsuit, this delay had a significant financial impact not only on Musk, but on other shareholders as well. Twitter's stock price shot up after Musk finally reported his purchase, the value of his shares jumping to $2.89 billion as news of his investment became public. The billionaire allegedly saved at least $150 million on his additional share purchases as well, as he was able to buy them at a lower price than if he fulfilled his reporting obligations.

In addition to this, the SEC alleged that Musk's failure to report his Twitter stock purchase within the legally mandated period caused other investors "substantial economic harm," as those that sold their shares during his delay were denied the benefit of the increased price.

The SEC initially sought to fine Musk, as well as have him give up the profit he gained from his alleged violation. Now it's singing a much different tune, agreeing to the comparatively small $1.5 million penalty and apparently allowing Musk to keep the millions he gained through his alleged violation. Further, none of the money will go to investors who allegedly lost out due to Musk's delay.

"The SEC has decided not to press for relief that could compensate Mr. Musk’s alleged victims, instead settling on a form of relief that would go into the government’s pocket," said Sooknanan.

"Whether the Executive Branch (through the SEC) has done enough to hold Mr. Musk to account for his alleged violation is, like many other issues, for our citizenry to decide at the ballot box."

Though the SEC filed the case during the Biden administration, it looks as though it doesn't want to come down on Musk quite as hard under Trump. Musk has had a tumultuous relationship with the president, appearing to swing wildly between a close ally or a bitter enemy. Considering this slap on the wrist, it seems reasonable to wonder whether their on-and-off again flirtation may have helped swing the situation in the billionaire's favour.

Apple is likely to join the foldable market this year — but Samsung is gearing up to have a competitor in place before the iPhone Ultra even launches.

Samsung is set to show off its latest wares at a Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22, and it's widely expected that the company will announce a third foldable to add onto the Fold and Flip form factors it has already been selling for years now.

This new foldable will reportedly be a shorter, wider device, similar in shape to the still-unannounced iPhone Ultra.

Here's everything you need to know about the wide Samsung foldable before its likely launch later this month.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: When is it coming?

As previously mentioned, Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event is on July 22. The phone will likely not hit shelves that day, but it should be available within a few weeks, if precedent holds.

This is where things get confusing. While we expect that the new wide foldable will be called Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, it is not a true successor to the Z Fold 7 (launched in 2025), at least not in terms of design.

There will be a successor to the Z Fold 7 launched alongside the new wide foldable, but it's reportedly called the Z Fold 8 Ultra. Hopefully Samsung will clear up the confusion on why that should be.

Samsung hasn't officially announced the Z Fold 8, but we have a decent idea of what to expect based on various leaks over the past several months.

For example, prominent leaker Sonny Dickson posted images on X back in April purporting to show dummy cases for the new batch of foldables.

Two of them look familiar to fans of Samsung phones, but one of them is clearly more squat and more wide than anything the company has made yet. We are pretty sure that's the Z Fold 8.

There are now official details yet, but leaker Tarun Vats recently posted specs on X. They include:

• 5.5-inch cover display with 120Hz refresh rate

• 7.6-inch inner display with 120Hz refresh rate

• Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset

• 12GB RAM

• 256GB/512GB/1TB storage

• 4,800mAh battery

Based on the dummy units seen above, those display dimensions sound about right. The idea, evidently, is to have a roughly 4:3 aspect ratio in the inner display, which is what Apple is reportedly going to do with its foldable.

This was recently corroborated even more by Android Authority, which found alleged images of the phone in One UI 9 files.

As for the other specs offered by Tarun Vats, there are no real surprises here. The RAM and storage counts are pretty normal for what will likely be an expensive phone, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset has been used in other recent Samsung devices.

All that should keep the phone performing smoothly. A 4,800mAh battery is also roughly what we would expect from a device like this. Hopefully, it'll be able to keep a charge for at least 24 hours.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: Cameras

This is one area where it seems like Samsung is making compromises. In the render above from Android Authority, there are only two rear cameras on the Z Fold 8. That's not ideal: the Z Fold 7 had three, and we expect the same of the Z Fold 8 Ultra.

OpenAI's ChatGPT revolutionized the artificial intelligence industry with an intelligent bot that can chat with you. However, chatting with ChatGPT (as with most competitor models) doesn't feel like a real conversation; it's more of a Q&A session with a really knowledgeable nerd.

On Wednesday, OpenAI launched GPT-Live, a new model that has a "full-duplex architecture," allowing it to listen and speak at the same time. This enables it to keep a far more realistic conversation, including giving you faster answers, and letting you know it's paying attention with an occasional "mhmm."

We haven't been able to test it out yet, though OpenAI posted a video showing the model's capabilities. The conversation does sound more natural, though the additional chatter probably takes some getting used to.

Google has a similar feature called Gemini Live, which can also keep up a longer conversation, though it doesn't seem to be as chatty as GPT-Live.

OpenAI says GPT-Live is the smartest voice model it has launched. Currently, it uses GPT-5.5 in the background, but the company says that will be "continuously updated" as new models are released. This is notable, as OpenAI is scheduled to launch its most powerful model yet, GPT-5.6, today.

Right now, GPT-Live is being rolled out to users globally, in two flavors: GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini (it's not yet available for us). OpenAI says it'll bring these models to its API "soon."

Between match attendance and the sheer number of viewers watching at home or at fan events, there's no doubt that this year's World Cup is going to break many records.

However, this latest record-breaking achievement from the 2026 World Cup is truly astonishing.

According to Google, Google Search saw its highest usage ever on Tuesday immediately after Argentina scored the winning goal in its comeback victory against Egypt in the World Cup Round of 16 match. This moment surpassed all prior Google Search usage periods in the company's near-28 year history.

"Google Search broke all prior usage records and saw its highest usage in history right after Argentina scored their winning goal in yesterday’s match!" said Google SVP of Knowledge & Information Nick Fox alongside the exploding head emoji in a post on X. 

Google confirmed to Mashable that the measure is based on the number of search queries per second that occurred on its search engine during the game, immediately following Argentina's third goal.

Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, were on the brink of elimination as Messi and the rest of the team were losing 2-0 up until the 79th minute of the game. Argentina pulled off a miraculous comeback, scoring three goals within 14 minutes, with the winning goal scored in the third minute of extra time after the 90th minute.

Google tells Mashable that the top search query after Argentina’s winning goal was “argentina vs egypt,” with users ostensibly searching for results of the match.

Google also shared global Google Trends data with Mashable that shows other search queries that contributed to the record-breaking Google Search usage after Argentina's third goal.

In addition to “argentina vs egypt,” these queries include:

• how many world cup goals does messi have

• who else is playing in the world cup today

• how many world cups have argentina won

• what is it called when a player hits another player in game

• is it messi's last world cup

As you can see, there was clearly lots of interest in Messi specifically, who scored the second goal and was credited with the assist for the first goal. Messi's goal was his eighth overall in this World Cup tournament so far. Also, based on the search data, it appears many users thought Argentina would go on to face Colombia next. However, later that day, Switzerland eliminated Colombia in penalties.

There is still plenty of World Cup left — and plenty more records to potentially break — with four quarterfinal matches, two semifinals, and then the final game left to go.

Argentina will now face Switzerland next on Saturday, July 11.

Meta smart glasses automatically disable recording if users attempt to disable the devices' recording indicator light, the company has revealed in the wake of mounting privacy concerns.

Announced in a blog post on July 7, the safety feature detects when a user has tampered with or covered the wearable's capture LED, a blinking white light on the edge of the frame that alerts others the wearer is using the glasses' camera.

If the light is no longer visible, Meta says, the glasses will disable use of the camera until the device detects the light is visible again.

The safety feature is available immediately on second generation devices. It will roll out across the line of wearables — including the new Meta Glasses by Kylie line — and is mandatory for all device users.

Mark Zuckerberg's company is also going after third-party sellers who advertise devices with disabled LEDs, including banning accounts on Meta platforms.

Meta's line of sleek smart glasses have sparked online debate about the ethics of filming others in public without their express consent. On the one hand, the glasses' hands-free video has revolutionized content creation, making it easier than ever to film yourself on the go. But on the other, they have led to a sub-genre of content featuring rampant harassment of people, mainly women, in public spaces.

Critics note the easy-to-miss LED is a key problem, and have urged Meta to update its devices with more explicit indicators.

But in the blog post, Meta explained its rationale for the small white light — which offers the "best combination of visibility and [user] experience" during both day and night filming.

As for why the device couldn't make a recording sound audible to anyone in the vicinity of a recording? "It’s simply not practical to make that sound be heard at a distance," claims the company.

Meta is facing a fresh wave of criticism over a new AI image generator — which encourages users to generate AI images using other people's public photos.

On Tuesday, Facebook and Instagram's parent company, Meta, introduced an AI tool called Muse Image, created by its AI division, Superintelligence Labs.

Muse Image is available via Meta's AI app, as well as WhatsApp and Instagram Stories. According to Meta, Muse Image "uses advanced reasoning to understand complex prompts, seamlessly blending multiple photos into high-quality creations you can download and share anywhere."

So far, so normal — but the AI image generator also lets users @ mention a specific Instagram account within the Meta AI app in order to add that Instagram account to the Muse Image creator.

In other words, Muse Image can add an Instagram user to their AI creations without the Instagram user's awareness. 

"Tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual that’s ready to post," Meta says. Any public Instagram profile can be used by Muse Image, unless that user explicitly opts-out.

Not surprisingly, privacy experts and watchdog groups are criticizing Meta over the feature. The nonprofit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen called the feature "an egregious invasion of user privacy."

"Meta has once again chosen the creepiest possible path," said J.B. Branch, the Public Citizen's director of federal AI governance and technology policy, in a statement. "People should not wake up to discover their face has become raw material for someone else's AI experiment.

"This is another invasion of consumers' privacy. Instead of asking for meaningful consent, Meta quietly defaults users into the system and buries the opt-out in account settings. It’s a playbook we've come to expect from a company with a long history of putting its business interests ahead of the public."

How to opt-out of Meta's Muse Image

Speaking of opting-out, there are two ways to make sure your public Instagram images and likeness aren't used by the @ mention Muse Image feature.

If your Instagram profile is set to private, Instagram respects that privacy setting as Muse Image requires access to Instagram account's public photos in order for the tool to generate AI images. Muse Image will inform a user that they cannot use your Instagram account likeness if they try to @ mention your account to generate an image.

If you have a public Instagram profile, however, you do now need to opt-out in your account settings.

Open the Instagram app on your phone. Head to your Profile. From there, tap the menu button in the top-right hand corner and then tap on Sharing and Reuse. On that page, scroll down to the "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta" section.

There are two settings, Posts and Reels, each with their own toggle. Turn both of them off if you don't want Meta's AI tools to use either your Posts, which include images, or your Reels, in order to generate content for Muse Image.

AI is everywhere these days, and on Discord, that caused several thousand people to lose access to the app for no good reason.

In a thread on X, the gamer-centric chat app confirmed that about 8,000 accounts over the past two months had been banned after posting totally harmless images such as video game textures. This happened because Discord employs an AI moderation system that mistook the images for "harmful material." While Discord's thread said that "a member of our Trust & Safety team always reviews flagged content before any action is taken," thousands of people nonetheless lost access to their accounts since May because of this issue.

Thankfully, Discord also said it is in the process of restoring the lost accounts.

On one hand, it's easy to see what happened here. As TechCrunch pointed out, some of the images users posted that led to bans, such as checkerboard patterns, bear a resemblance to tactics used by bad actors to conceal child exploitation content. It's easy to rationalize how an AI moderation tool would see that and do something about it. On the other hand, this is a clear-as-day example of why humans still need to be involved in these processes, as a human eye could have instantly discerned that the images in question were harmless.

But with AI becoming an ever bigger part of our everyday lives, expect stuff like this to keep happening.

On Wednesday, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk announced that the new version of the company's AI chatbot, Grok 4.5, will be released to the public on Thursday, July 9.

"Based on strong positive feedback from customers in our beta test program, @SpaceXAI will make Grok 4.5 available to the public tomorrow. It is an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost," wrote Musk in a post on X.

The recently renamed AI/social networking/data-centers-in-space company is currently testing Grok 4.5 as private beta, while the stable version of the LLM is currently Grok 4.3.

Musk calls the new Grok "Opus-class" in reference to the company's competitor Anthropic, whose general-purpose model, Claude Opus, is currently at version 4.6. Anthropic's most powerful model, Fable 5, has only recently been reinstated for users after being pulled following an intervention from the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, OpenAI's powerful GPT-5.6 model is also launching on Thursday, following a short-lived launch ban from the White House.

In a blog post, OpenAI says it spent weeks putting GPT‑5.6 Sol through its paces for weaknesses, during which time it "strengthened protections for higher-risk activity, sensitive cyber requests, and repeated misuse." The company called it "our most capable model yet for cybersecurity" and claimed GPT‑5.6 Sol stands up to competitor Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 using a third of output tokens (the blocks of text an AI model processes to generate responses).

The news comes after reports that the White House told OpenAI to limit the initial release of GPT-5.6 to a select testing group. In its blog post, the company described this as a "small group of trusted partners whose participation has been shared with the government." Now, OpenAI has the green light for GPT-5.6's public release. The announcement arrives a week after OpenAI reportedly proposed giving the U.S. government a five percent stake in the company, with CEO Sam Altman in early talks with President Donald Trump, according to the Financial Times.

Competitor Anthropic also experienced restraints from the U.S. government, with the White House ordering the company "to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States." Anthropic is now allowed to share Mythos 5 with "a set of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure," and Fable 5, a version of Mythos, is out globally.

Summer slumber isn't a thing at Mountain View: Google's new Pixel smartphones will be unveiled on August 12.

The company recently sent out invites for the event, which will be held in New York City, at 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 12. The invite shows a detail of (presumably) the upcoming phone (in a dazzling gold/copper color) and its camera.

The company is expected to launch a massive addition to its phone lineup, with rumors pointing to four new devices: Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

At the event, Google is also expected to launch a new wearable, the Pixel Watch 5.

The event timing is notable as it's about a month ahead of Apple's September event, where the company is likely to unveil new iPhones, including its first-ever foldable phone, the iPhone Ultra.

To make this summer even more interesting, Samsung is also about to launch new foldable phones, including a super-wide version of the Galaxy Z Fold, at an Unpacked event on July 22.

One of the worst-kept secrets in tech isn't a secret anymore.

After months of rumors and leaks, Samsung on Tuesday finally confirmed what we already knew: There will be a Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22 in London, starting at 9am ET. You'll be able to watch the event live on Samsung's website or its YouTube channel.

In the brief announcement sent to media outlets, Samsung said it will "introduce its latest Galaxy innovations that build on its leadership in foldables."

That's right in line with what we expect to see at this Galaxy Unpacked event. Reporting suggests Samsung will launch three foldables instead of just two this year: A Z Flip 8, a Z Fold 8, and a Z Fold 8 Ultra.

The Z Fold 8 will be a new model with a shorter, wider form factor, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra will be a successor to the excellent Z Fold 7.

We're also expecting to see at least two new Galaxy Watch models, as well as Samsung's first foray into smart glasses, which may be called Galaxy Glasses.

And if there are any surprises beyond those announcements? We'll know in a couple of weeks.

On tenterhooks waiting for Insta360's new 360-degree camera to come out? You won't have to wait much longer.

Insta360's latest filing with FCC reveals the company's X6 360-degree camera, model code CINSABXA, received FCC certification on July 3.

What does this mean? It means that nothing stands in the way of the X6's launch, likely early in the fall.

Insta360 has not yet confirmed a launch date, but the usual timeframe for product launches following FCC certification suggests the X6 will be announced in August or September.

Detailed specs are not confirmed in the filing, but other reports suggest the Insta360 X6 adds intriguing new features to the popular 360 degree camera. The X6 will reportedly be able to shoot video in 8K at 60fps, which is an upgrade from the maximum 30fps in 8K from its predecessor, the X5.

The X6 is also reportedly able to shoot in 10-bit color, with larger sensors meaning better recordings in low-light conditions.

Pricing has also not been confirmed, but reports suggest that the X6 will launch somewhere between $549 and $599.

Insta360 is quickly becoming a powerhouse in the camera market. The company most recently released the Insta360 Luna Ultra, a gimbal camera that rivals DJI's Osmo Pocket line.

Still, Insta360 is still best known for its flagship line of 360 degree cameras — most frequently launched in April. The Insta360 X5 was launched in April 2025, and the X4 came out in the April before that.

But April 2026 came and went without the release of its next generation 360 degree camera, leaving eager customers concerned.

So thanks to the the FCC filing, Insta360 fans can look forward to the release of the company's newest 360 degree camera in a matter of weeks.

We are just a few months away from Apple's big annual September iPhone event, where the company will undoubtedly make major announcements about the iPhone 18. There are also reports that the long-awaited foldable iPhone, known as iPhone Ultra, will be announced at the event.

A new report from an Apple analyst today says the iPhone Ultra will likely launch at a price between $2,300 and $2,500. That's roughly twice the price of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

If you're really set on buying the foldable iPhone but are a little turned off by the price, here's how to justify it. The iPhone Ultra isn't just a foldable iPhone. It's also going to be like having a pocket-sized, foldable iPad.

When closed, the iPhone Ultra will look like the average iPhone. However, when opened, the iPhone Ultra's inner display will be just like an iPad mini-sized OLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The iPhone Ultra reportedly measures at 7.8 inches when opened, putting it right around the size of the 8.3-inch iPad mini.

Over on Reddit, one user created a size comparison image of the iPhone Ultra's reported dimensions alongside Apple's current iPad lineup, including the iPad mini and iPad Pro.

The iPhone Ultra, when opened, seems more like a part of the iPad family than any iPhone model.

In fact, the iPhone Ultra looks like it'll be wider than other foldable smartphone models from Apple's competitors, such as Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, and the Motorola Fold.

When the iPhone Ultra is officially announced, it'll be interesting to see whether Apple positions the foldable device as more than just an iPhone but also a pocket-sized tablet. Based on its reported display, the iPhone Ultra can certainly serve that purpose.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman first reported in June that Apple plans to add a second rear camera lens to the iPhone Air 2 and improve its battery life. The original iPhone Air launched with just a single 48-megapixel lens, and Gurman's report indicated the additional lens would be ultrawide rather than telephoto.

That claim has now been backed by leaker Digital Chat Station, according to 9to5Mac, which noted the source has a solid track record. The outlet said it had been unclear whether the second lens would be telephoto or ultrawide, with its own reader poll showing a preference for telephoto, but recent reporting has converged on an ultrawide lens.

On battery life, 9to5Mac reported that Digital Chat Station has provided specific figures suggesting a notably higher-capacity battery, citing supply-chain forecasts pointing to roughly 3,500 mAh, up from the current model's 3,149 mAh. That would put the Air 2 closer to the 3,692 mAh battery found in the standard iPhone 17.

Both upgrades would address the most common criticisms of the original iPhone Air. Mashable's review of the device praised its slim form factor but flagged the lack of a second lens and underwhelming battery life as its biggest shortcomings, adding that those issues may have contributed to soft sales.

The iPhone Air 2 isn't expected to launch until spring 2027, following earlier reporting by The Information that cited weak first-generation sales as the reason for delaying the device's release beyond Apple's typical fall cycle. Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold are still expected to debut this fall.

Samsung is set to capture the world's attention by hijacking the tech world's attention for a couple of hours later this month.

The Korean tech giant is reportedly holding a new Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22, according to many leaks and rumors. At this event, we'll more than likely see at least six new devices from Samsung. Without wasting any more time, here's what to expect from the next Galaxy Unpacked.

Three new foldables arriving, including Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8

The real headliner of each summer Unpacked, at least in recent years, has been Samsung's lineup of foldable phones. For several years, Samsung has launched a new Z Flip and Z Fold phone each summer. In 2026, all reports indicate a third phone is being added to the list. The three Samsung foldables we expect to see at Unpacked are:

• Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8

• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8

• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

This is where things get a little confusing. You'd think the Z Fold 8 Ultra would be the new addition to the lineup, but recent reports indicate that the Z Fold 8 is actually a new device this year. Rumors for months have pointed to Samsung releasing a wider foldable this year, and it sounds like that phone will take the Z Fold 8 name, while a true successor to the Z Fold 7 will be called Z Fold 8 Ultra.

Anyway, the new Z Fold 8 will potentially have a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded. These dimensions are pretty similar to the rumored design of the still-unannounced foldable iPhone, suggesting Samsung wants to introduce this third foldable as a direct competitor to Apple's device.

Aside from that, we expect the Z Fold 8 Ultra to be fairly similar in design to the Z Fold 7, with a new Snapdragon chip and a stronger 200MP main camera on the back. Samsung is also said to have done some work to make the crease on the folding display less visible this year. The Z Flip 8, by all accounts, will follow a similar path: roughly the same design as the Z Flip 7, but with a better processor and a less visible crease.

Oh, and thanks to RAMageddon, do not be surprised to see year-over-year price increases for all of these devices.

New Galaxy Watches on the way

Samsung usually uses this summer event to showcase its latest smartwatch advancements, and 2026 looks no different. This year, we expect to see two new Samsung watches:

• Samsung Galaxy Watch 9

• Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2

It's generally accepted that both of these phones will see fairly incremental changes from before. There will surely be new health-tracking features, and some small design changes, with the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 in particular said to incorporate classic numbers on the watch face, a thinner bezel, and better side buttons. Most importantly, for some, it sounds like Samsung is skipping out on a new Galaxy Watch Classic this year. You'll get a base model and a premium model, and that's it, as far as anyone can tell.

Galaxy Glasses tipped for their big debut

Lastly, Samsung's long-awaited smart glasses should make their debut at Unpacked in July. Most likely called Galaxy Glasses, we expect these specs to work similarly to the ones Meta has been releasing for a few years now. They will not include any augmented reality or heads-up display features, focusing instead on on-board cameras and a built-in AI assistant, courtesy of Google Gemini, to provide information about what you're seeing, should you ask.

Anthropic announced Tuesday that Claude Cowork, its agentic tool for delegating multistep work tasks, is expanding beyond desktop to mobile and web platforms, according to the company's blog post. Beta access is rolling out first to Max plan subscribers over the coming days, with availability expanding to additional plans in the following weeks.

Cowork allows users to hand Claude a task spanning files, calendar, email, messaging apps, and other connected tools until the job is complete. Per Anthropic, more than 90 percent of Cowork usage has come from everyday knowledge work rather than software development, with business operations and content creation representing roughly half of all activity — tasks like reconciling quarterly spending, converting contracts into renewal trackers, or building presentations from call transcripts.

The company said the expansion allows sessions to span devices, so users can start a task on a desktop and check progress or retrieve finished work on a phone. Tasks can also continue running in the background without a device connected; scheduled jobs, for instance, can run overnight and be ready for review by morning. Anthropic emphasized that Claude will still pause and ask for input when a decision requires human judgment, and that no output is finalized without user review.

On web and desktop, chat and Cowork will now share a single unified interface, with projects and artifacts accessible across both experiences from launch. The desktop app remains the most complete version of Cowork, retaining access to local files and browser integration, while the mobile and web versions extend access to users who previously could not install the desktop application.

To coincide with the launch, Anthropic said it is doubling Cowork usage limits through Aug. 5.

A study by a team of advisers to the Australian government has suggested that the country's social media ban for children under 16 is ineffective, Reuters reported.

Australia enacted the ban in Dec. 2025, requiring social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok to take "reasonable steps" to prevent those under 16 from creating accounts. The fine for noncompliance was originally up to $AU49.5 million ($US33 million), but in June Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the maximum fine would be doubled to $AUD99 million ($US68.2 million).

"It is clear that social media platforms are adopting tricks straight out of the big tech playbook and doing the bare minimum to get by," Minister for Communications Anika Wells said in an official statement at the time.

Now, news comes that the bans are failing in test environments. A team of software testers found that platforms didn't ask for proof of age for any of the 50 accounts it opened after the law went into effect. The dummy accounts claimed to be 16, and apparently, the initial vetting process (which estimates age based on online activity) doesn't flag young users for further checks.

Director at testing firm KJR, Andrew Hammond, told Reuters, "You ​should be asked to demonstrate how old you are, and not once have we been asked to verify our age or use age-assurance measures."

Researchers tested these accounts on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and TikTok. One account that signed up for X and claimed to be 16 was shown pornographic content, according to Reuters, and X didn't respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Google, which owns YouTube, also didn't respond to Reuters' request for comment. Snap and TikTok declined to comment.

A Meta spokesperson told Reuters that the test seemed inconsistent with Australia's guidance of escalating "to ‌formal age ⁠verification when behavioral indicators suggest they may be underage, or when an account is reported." The spokesperson also said it was unclear if the dummy accounts "posted content or engaged in a way a true under-16-year-old user would."

Australian streaming platform Kick, meanwhile, refused to let them make accounts without proof of age. A spokesperson for Kick said it's not possible to rely on age inference (guessing age depending on behavior) because the platform is new and doesn't have enough data to do so.

Social media bans like Australia's are criticized due to how difficult they are to enforce, and because of potential violations to free speech and expression. Yet, more countries plan to enact such bans, such as Canada, Indonesia, and the UK.

When you need to stay aware of your surroundings, Transparency Mode lets outside sounds come through. The earbuds also use three microphones on each side with AI-powered noise reduction to improve call clarity.

Battery life that lasts all day

The Ear (3a) delivers up to 10 hours of playback on the earbuds alone with ANC turned off, and up to 42 hours total with the charging case. With ANC enabled, battery life drops to up to six hours on the earbuds and 25 hours with the case. A quick five-minute charge gives around one hour of playback, which is handy when you’re running low.

Transparent design with a more comfortable fit

Nothing kept its recognizable transparent look but refined the design with a rounder charging case and improved ergonomics. The earbuds now come with an XS ear tip option, making them a better fit for more users. The updated LED indicator also makes it easier to check charging status, battery levels, and pairing progress.

Nothing X app and Nothing phone integration

The Nothing X app gives users access to EQ controls, firmware updates, Find My Earbuds, and other customization options. If paired with a Nothing smartphone, Ear (3a) also supports features like quick ChatGPT access and Essential News for hands-free updates.

My 4th of July festivities were disrupted when a microburst moved through my area during a thunderstorm, knocking out the electricity for about eight hours. Do you know what I wish we had on hand? In other words, it's probably overkill for quick camping trips. If you're in the market for a power station that can do a whole lot more than just charge your devices, however, the Apex 300 will certainly have you covered. And it's currently 200 bucks cheaper than usual.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a significantly larger battery than its predecessor.

We know this because a leaker called Digital Chat Station noticed the regulatory filings for the upcoming iPhones in China (via MacRumors).

Starting with the iPhone 18 Pro, it's apparently going to have a 4,056mAh battery in China and a 4,288mAh in the U.S. (the difference is there due to the SIM tray, which the iPhones still have in China; the SIM tray takes up some space that would otherwise be allocated to the battery). That's an increase compared to the iPhone 17 Pro which has a 3,988mAh and 4,252mAh battery, respectively, but it's hardly sensational.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a different story. The Chinese database filings reveal that it's going to have a 5,391mAh battery in China, and a 5,567mAh battery in the U.S., a decent leap from the 4,823/5,088mAh battery on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

There's one caveat to this: The leaker says that the battery capacities for the iPhone 18 Pro Max is "questionable and needs further verification."

If the report is accurate, iPhone 18 Pro Max buyers can expect a decent increase in battery life. The battery capacity is roughly 10 percent larger compared to last year's model, though that doesn't directly translate into battery life as it also depends on the chips powering the device, the display, and various optimizations to conserve battery life. The good news is that Apple is very good at these optimizations, so we wouldn't be surprised to see an even bigger leap in nominal battery life on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will likely be unveiled in early September, alongside Apple's first foldable phone, which will probably be named the iPhone Ultra.

Waymo passengers in San Francisco got the ride of their life over the July 4th weekend — when their car ran over a lit firework.

The riders appear to have filmed the incident from the back seat as they approached an intersection with people lighting illegal fireworks.

The autonomous vehicle then drove into the hazard. Passenger Rose Peterson told local affiliate ABC7 the incident was terrifying.

"The more me and my fiancé were talking about it, something really bad could have happened to us, something bad could have happened to the people around us," Peterson said. "It was a very scary situation."

The video caught one of the passengers uttering the remark: "Are we on fire, dude?"

A Waymo spokesperson told Mashable there were no injuries or vehicle damage. The company has also contacted the rider about their well-being.

"We're committed to keeping our riders safe and earning the trust of the communities where we operate," the spokesperson said in a statement. "We take situations like this seriously and are committed to evaluating and learning from these events."

Elsewhere in San Francisco on July 4, Waymo cars stalled when they lost power amidst heavy traffic congestion. Drivers reported being trapped in an hours-long traffic jam as they waited for the autonomous vehicles to be towed.

At CES earlier this year, Hyundai and Boston Dynamics introduced the world to their Atlas humanoid robot. Atlas walked out on stage at Hyundai's keynote event and wowed the crowd so much that Mashable, along with the rest of the CNET Group, declared that Atlas was the "Best Robot" at the show.

Now, just a few months removed from the big technology event, Atlas made its big debut on perhaps the biggest stage of all: The 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As the Round of 16 match between Norway and Brazil was about to enter the second half, Atlas emerged from the player tunnel and showed off its moves on the pitch. While Atlas has previously performed dance routines, the humanoid robot had a more appropriate showing at the World Cup, mimicking player celebrations, including those of Norway's star player, Erling Haaland.

Atlas wasn't just there for entertainment either. Hyundai's robot played a crucial role at the end of the half, delivering the match ball to the referee so the game could continue.

Mashable was at the World Cup match at New York-New Jersey Stadium to witness Atlas. The robot carried out its duties without a hitch. And, most importantly, the crowd seemed enamored by the robot. Spectators held out their smartphones, snapping photos and taking videos of Atlas doing its best player impersonations.

According to Hyundai, Atlas was powered by "several core robotics capabilities that enable advanced movement and real-world interaction." Retargeting technology allowed Atlas to analyze and adapt to human movements. Reinforcement Learning was used to train Atlas through thousands of simulations on how to move, and Whole-Body Control was deployed to coordinate movement across the robot's body.

"The way we trained Atlas to perform these fun movements at the match is similar to how we teach the robot to take on real-world industrial applications," said Boston Dynamics Director of Robotics Behaviour Alberto Rodriguez. "It’s a great way to introduce people everywhere to the incredible potential of today's AI-enabled robots.” 

It turned out that Atlas picked a perfect celebration to imitate at halftime. At the end of the match, Norway emerged victorious, upsetting Brazil 2-1. Both of Norway's goals were scored by Haaland. So, between Haaland and Atlas's impersonation, fans got to see plenty of Viking-esque celebrations on the pitch this past Sunday.

An hours-long traffic jam in San Francisco on Saturday July 4 was partly the result of stalled Waymo vehicles, the autonomous car company has confirmed.

Alleged videos of the gridlock surfaced on X, where drivers posted angrily about Waymo cars that wouldn't move.

A Waymo spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that the city's 4th of July celebration at the Golden Gate Bridge led to traffic disruptions, a high volume of travelers, and unexpected road closures nearby.

While some of the autonomous vehicles remained operational, others ran out of charge while idling and were towed as a result.

"Our priority is keeping San Francisco moving safely, especially during major city celebrations," the Waymo spokesperson said in a statement. "Our team is always evaluating ways to strengthen Waymo's resilience in major traffic disruptions."

This isn't the first time that stalled Waymo cars have caused traffic jams in the city by the Bay.

Last December, a power outage gave San Francisco Waymo vehicles trouble at intersections without functioning stoplights, and the company had to temporarily suspend its service.

Ironically, two days before the 4th of July gridlock, Waymo posted a video on X about the simplicity of hailing one of its cars.

Elon Musk's space exploration and AI company SpaceX may be looking to compete with Apple and the iPhone, even though Musk has denied the reports.

SpaceX has been showing off a prototype of a "handset-like device" to investors recently, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.

The device is reportedly focused on bringing AI capabilities to users, running on the company's own operating system and integrating xAI's technology to power its AI features. It's been described as having a "sleek design" and being "slimmer than an iPhone." The device is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset.

However, Musk weighed in on the Wall Street Journal report, calling it "utterly false" on his social media platform, X, without elaborating any further.

Musk has previously denied reports from earlier this year that SpaceX was working on a phone that would connect directly to Starlink satellites.

However, this time around, the Wall Street Journal's sources claim that there is a prototype that has been physically shown to investors.

Musk has previously voiced his dissatisfaction with Apple's iPhone and its dominance in the mobile market. 

"Man, I sure hope we don't have to make a phone," Musk said at a town hall event in October 2024. "That's a lot of work."

"The idea of making a phone makes me want to die," he continued. "But if we have to make a phone, we will. But we will aspire not to make a phone."

It's possible that Musk doesn't view SpaceX's handheld device as a smartphone, as it seems more like an AI device. It's also possible that the device does have traditional smartphone functionality and Musk is just trying to deny its existence.

According to this most recent report, SpaceX informed investors that the device is in an early stage, so things can change, including whether it ever even reaches the public.

Microsoft laid off 4,800 employees Monday, with more than 30 percent of the cuts in its Xbox division, according to an internal email reviewed by IGN.

The reductions, described internally as an Xbox "reset," will affect roughly 1,600 employees immediately, with the company planning to eliminate about 20 percent of Xbox jobs by the end of its 2027 fiscal year.

As part of the shakeup, four studios are being spun off from Microsoft. Double Fine and Compulsion Games are returning to independent ownership under founders Tim Schafer and Guillaume Provost, respectively, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are being sold to new owners, with commitments in place to continue development on their respective titles, Senua and State of Decay 3.

In an internal memo obtained by IGN, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the division's business "is not healthy," citing profit margins that are far below those of comparable platform and publishing companies. Sharma noted that Xbox lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year and pointed to oversaturation in the games market as a factor in the strategic pullback.

The memo also confirmed additional layoffs across Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, and Mojang, though Sharma said no first-party announced games are being canceled. As part of a broader management shakeup, Mojang and King will now report directly to Sharma, and Helen Chiang has been named Xbox's first Chief Operating Officer.

IGN, which is owned also reported that Microsoft is weighing the sale or closure of Arkane Studios, which has been developing the delayed, over-budget title Blade. According to the outlet, French labor consultations over Arkane's future could take months.

Samsung is going to make a lot of money selling memory chips.

According to Reuters, the company is about to post a huge profit increase estimate for its Q2 profit, an 18-fold increase compared to the same period last year. That would be 86 trillion won ($56.35 billion) in profit for the quarter starting in April and ending in June, up from just 4.7 trillion won ($3 billion) in Q2 2025.

The reported number comes from an estimate based on forecasts from 30 analysts, and reflects an ongoing memory chip supply crunch. The insatiable need for memory chip recently drove stock prices of memory chip makers such as Micron and Hynix through the roof. As the largest chip memory chipmaker in the world, Samsung will profit from the market imbalance too.

Samsung sells memory chips to numerous companies including tech giants such as Apple, Google, and Nvidia.

The global memory crisis, dubbed the RAMageddon, has helped memory chip makers lock in lucrative contracts and increase profits, but it also caused consumer tech prices to surge. In June, Apple announced significant price increases across numerous product categories, and gadgets such as the PlayStation, the Switch, phones like Motorola Razr, and laptops from Acer, Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoft have suffered a similar fate.

Apple's iPhone Ultra will be slightly late, it will be pricy, and it'll still sell out fast.

That's according to reliable analyst and Apple sleuth Ming-Chi Kuo, who shared his thoughts in a post on X.

In the article, Kuo compares the iPhone Ultra (a likely name for Apple's first foldable iPhone) with the iPhone X, which was the first iPhone to sport a notch on top, ushering the era of modern iPhones back in 2017.

The iPhone Ultra will be a little late, says Kuo. It will be announced in September, together with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, but it will actually start shipping about a month later, just like the iPhone X did when it launched.

There's been considerable back and forth about this, with some analysts claiming the iPhone Ultra will not be late at all, and others saying it will be delayed. At this point, it's getting impossible to figure out who's right, but at least most reports now agree that the Ultra will be unveiled in September.

Kuo also gave his most precise prediction for the iPhone Ultra's price, which according to him will be "roughly $2,300–$2,500." Kuo previously said the Ultra would cost $2,000 to $2,500. Notably, Apple recently increased the prices of numerous products due to a memory chip supply crunch, but the iPhones were left alone.

Even with a price point that's roughly two times the price of the company's current flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Kuo expects strong sales "at least through the end of 2026," which could mean the iPhone Ultra would "sell out immediately after pre-orders open, with delivery lead times quickly stretching to 4–6 weeks or longer and remaining there through December." In other words, even if you have north of two thousand dollars to spare for a foldable iPhone, you might have to wait a month or more to get it.

Apple is likely to launch the iPhone Ultra, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, in early September. Here's all we know about the Ultra so far.

If you want information about saving energy during a massively unpleasant heatwave, the United States Department of Energy doesn't seem willing to help.

The Verge and others reported that the Department of Energy conducted a broad, sweeping purge of roughly 6,000 pages on its website related to energy conservation this week. While no one in the federal government has provided definitive confirmation of why this happened, the deletions came shortly after New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani shared an advisory on social media urging New Yorkers to set their indoor air conditioners to 78 degrees in the middle of a heatwave.

Conservative accounts immediately pounced on Mamdani's post, accusing the mayor of spreading the horrors of communism by asking people to keep their homes at a moderate temperature during a weekend in which New York City reached triple-digit temperatures. However, many quickly pointed out that the Department of Energy's official stance mirrored Mamdani's guidance. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, had also shared identical guidance in the past during heatwaves.

Within 24 hours or so of Mamdani's announcement, eagle-eyed internet users noticed that the Department of Energy had deleted its own web pages espousing the same advice.

Again, no one knows for certain why these web pages were deleted at the precise time they were. But the timing is suspect, and given the Trump administration's previous actions, it's not unreasonable to assume it was done out of pettiness.

A new fleet of autonomous taxis has arrived in one of America's worst traffic cities.

Specifically, Tesla's Robotaxi service is now active in Miami, according to a post from the company on X. The same post included a map of a relatively small portion of West Miami, where you can currently hail a Robotaxi. Presumably, more of the city will be included in the service at some point, but for now, the robot cars are limited to those areas.

This follows a limited rollout in Houston and Dallas back in April. Tesla's Robotaxi service has been slowly expanding across the United States, and if precedent holds, the cabs will be available in a larger portion of Miami in the near-ish future, as Austin went from limited to full availability last month. Other cities that could get Robotaxi service this year include Orlando, Tampa, and Phoenix, though, as Electrek pointed out back in April, the company has not been especially good about meeting plans on time.

It should also be noted that these Robotaxis do not come with safety monitors. This is certainly one way to get around in Miami without worrying as much about the city's notoriously awful traffic problems, but keep in mind the risks involved.

Midjourney is attempting to turn the tables on the Hollywood studios suing it for copyright infringement, asking a federal judge to compel Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. Discovery to disclose their internal use of artificial intelligence, according to a Variety report published this week.

The discovery dispute is the latest chapter in a copyright battle that began in June 2025, when Disney and Comcast's Universal filed suit, accusing Midjourney of enabling large-scale infringement of copyrighted characters. That original complaint described Midjourney as a "bottomless pit of plagiarism" that generated unauthorized recreations of characters, including Darth Vader and Elsa, as previously reported by this outlet.

Warner Bros. Discovery joined the fight three months later, in September 2025, accusing Midjourney of "brazen theft" involving characters such as Superman, Batman, and Bugs Bunny, and seeking $150,000 per infringed work.

More than a year into the litigation, Midjourney has countered with a "fair use" defense, arguing the studios engage in comparable AI practices internally. Per Variety, the company's attorney, Bobby Ghajar, wrote that if the studios are "doing the very thing they seek to punish," that evidence is central to Midjourney's fair-use and "unclean hands" arguments. The company is seeking access to the studios' AI business plans, training datasets, model weights, and board presentations on AI.

A magistrate judge ruled against Midjourney's broader discovery request in mid-June 2026, limiting the studios' disclosure obligations to consumer-facing AI tools rather than internal systems. Midjourney has since asked Judge John Kronstadt to overturn that ruling.

The studios' attorney, David Singer, has dismissed the effort as a "fishing expedition" meant to deflect from Midjourney's own conduct, according to Variety's reporting.
